Sepp Blatter re-elected as FIFA president

blatterThe 65th FIFA congress was held at the Hallenstadion in Zurich where president Joseph S. Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term of office, amid the worst corruption crisis in soccer history; he failed to get the 139 votes needed in the first round, but claimed his victory when his challenger conceded before the second round, regarding the votes, if any of the contestants can’t secure the two thirds of the vote, the whole process needs to be done again in which a simple majority will suffice to decide the result.

Swiss police arrested seven FIFA officials during a raid on a luxury Zurich hotel on Wednesday, as US authorities brought charges against more officials accused of taking more than 150 million USD in bribes; they will remain in custody in Zurich fighting extradition to the US.

Swiss prosecutors have launched a separate investigation into the bidding process for the world cup tournaments in 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar, and some of FIFA major sponsors like Coca Cola, Visa, Addidas have expressed concern over these investigations.

Former FIFA vice president Jack Warner turned himself over to police in Trinidad and Tobago after they issued an arrest warrant at the US request , Blatter has distanced himself from the arrests admitting that he has nothing to do with them and that he can’t monitor everyone all the time.

Blatter who is in office now for 17 years got a full support in Asia , the Americas and Africa, the votes were per regional footballing, one vote for each national association ,54 for Africa(CAF),53 for Europe(UEFA),46 for Asia(AFC),35 for North and Central America(Concacaf),11 for the Oceania(OFC)and 10 forsouth America(Conmebol).

imagesVoting took place in a secret ballot, there were two booths set up on either side of the stage where delegates casted their votes.

The order of votes was decided alphabetically, and a winner must achieve two third of the vote in the first round, 139 out of 209 member associations.

Blatter’s challenger was prince Ali bin al Hussein, the brother of king Abdullah of Jordan, and the 3rdson of the late king Hussein of Jordan, he has been vice president of FIFA Asia since 2011, he got 73 votes against 133 for Blatter in the first round and conceded before the second round of voting ,Blatter then was re-elected for a fifth term.

In his speech before voting, Blatter urged to honor the trust invested in each and every one, he promised to uphold human rights and if elected he will take full responsibility in this service organization, he called upon all to act in the future with respect and fair play and that an  evolution is needed  not a revolution .

Blatter will remain the FIFA president for the next four years after which he will step down.
