Chinese club says goodbye to teacher

Chinese CommunityWILLEMSTAD - Recently the Chinese School Curaçao bid farewell to Li Yifeng, who taught at the school of the Curacao Chinese Club for a full year. This is the reason why Curaçao Chronicle interviewed Mrs. Li to get an impression about her experience here on the island.

When asked what her qualifications are and how long she has been engaged in education, mmexport1532389349922Mrs Li indicated that she has a Bachelor degree and has been teaching for 24 years now.

The conditions to be chosen by the Chinese state to become a teacher in a foreign country are strict. The responsibility is also great. Li told us that for a person to be chosen, they must have more than 5 years of teaching experience. They have to be excellent teachers who have firm ideological and political principles; have special skills, are versatile, can spread Chinese traditional culture; excellent in Puthonghua (Mandarin) and know some Cantonese and English.

mmexport1532389340185About her experience here in Curaçao, Li said that “the natural environment here is beautiful, the air is fresh, the sea is blue and the sun is shining. The people here are very friendly, and even if they don’t know you, they will say hello. The diet here is mainly Western-style, referring to fried or cold food, and it is relatively simple to eat. The cost of mmexport1532389325763living here is low, and it is sunny all year round. It only takes a few sets of summer clothes to live here. People here can wear flip flops and light clothing, mainly T-shirts and suit shorts. Renting a house or an apartment is also cheap. Cars here are very cheap, you can buy a used Toyota car for a little more than 10,000 RMB (1700 dollars). Curaçao is very different from the rest of the place I have been to.”

She also indicated that she had some contact with the local culture. “I went to Punda's bars, the Old Castle Bar, Mambo beach, and watched the local gas company's (Curoil) anniversary performance, Easter event, National Day event, etc. I feel that the music here is mainly percussion music, and the joyful music is the main one. The dance is dominated by twisting.”

mmexport1532389317847Now that she is leaving the island, we asked her if she will continue teaching in other countries. If she has the opportunity, she will definitely apply to teach in another country.

Her first impression of the island was dance, music, food, beauty, multi-lingual, multi-ethnic and multi-ethnic.

The Director of the Chinese School, Peter Wong was also present during the farewell celebration. He told Curaçao Chronicle that the Curaçao Chinese School was established in 2014. The second volunteer was teacher Li Yifeng, who has taught at the school in the school year of 2017.

As a senior teacher in China, Li Yifeng is the vice director of Longmen County Middle School. She insisted on the importance of the inheritance of Chinese culture as a part of the education and takes this as one of her responsibilities. She used her knowledge and academic experience to combine the local customs into her teachings at the Chinese School Curacao.

mmexport1532389311930“She used a lot of metaphorical stories to attract students' interest in Chinese and this has resulted in an excellent learning experience.  To maintain order in the classroom, her strict requirements and rigorous style also left us a deep impression. In her private time teacher Li formed a dance team with the members of the Curacao Chinese Club Chinese Women's Association. This dance team has become another important group to participate in cultural exchanges together with the school’s children dance group, and has been well received by other overseas Chinese and society,” said Wong.
