Excellent Results for Curacao and Bonaire Windsurfers in Miami

The Curacao and Bonaire team on the podium at the Miami Slalom Open / TILO International Cup 2013

Windsurfers at Miami Slalom Open 2013WILLEMSTAD - Last weekend, from 18th to 20thOctober 2013, took place in USA, the Miami Slalom Open / Tilo International Cup 2013. The competition was held in Virginia Key, Florida, and it had the participation of 24 competitors representing countries like USA, Australia, Denmark, Jamaica, and Italy and among them the team of windsurfers from Curacao and Bonaire.

Participating for Curacao was the IFCA 2013 Word Champion U-15 Jean Paul Da Silva De Goes (age 14), and participating for Bonaire were IFCA 2012 World Champion U-15 Aron Etmon (age 15), and by his brother Oscar Etmon (age 13).

During the first two days of competition, no races were held due to the lack of wind. Mother Nature didn’t want to cooperate, as the wind was not enough for racing. On Sunday, the third and last day of competition, the wind predictions in the morning were not so good, and it looked like the competition would end without results. The anxious windsurfers were waiting for some wind to be able to race, but it was not only until late in the afternoon that the wind blew to the minimum enough to be able to complete 3 heats, with one heat discard, to obtain the final results.

Even though the wind conditions were far from perfect, and several times the competitors had problems with seaweed accumulated in their fins, which lowered their speed several times, the Curacao and Bonaire team made it possible to win prizes in the category in which they participated.

The great results for the team Curacao and Bonaire team was as follows:Participating in a higher category for his age, and representing Curacao, Jean Paul Da Silva De Goes, age 14,won a good 2nd Place U-17.  1st place was for the 16 years old Lucas Gonzales from USA, and 3rd place was for Brian Hollenbeck (age 16) also from USA.

Representing Bonaire and participating in the highest category, the Pro-Men Class, Aron Etmon age 15 won an excellent 3rd place. The 1st place was for the PWA Kurosh Kiani from Denmark, and 3rd place was for Alex Morales from USA. Also representing Bonaire, Aron’s little brother, Oscar Etmon age 13, won 1st place U-15.

Congratulations to all participants, whom with their effort, dedication, discipline and constant practice, are giving all out to proudly represent our beloved islands Curacao and Bonaire to bring new titles, every time they compete internationally. This couldn’t be possible without the constant support of these windsurfers’ sponsors: Severne Sails, Starboard, Goisco, Insel Air, Windsurfing Curacao, Princess, and Netvision.
