Fall winter 12/13 trends: Peplum Perfect

It won't make you look thin, men don't find it sexy and it gets crushed on public transport and in car seats, so why in Gods name has it become a fashion trend?

The definition of peplum according to the dictionary is a short overskirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress. Peplum originated in the 1940’s, revived in the 1980’s and is now ruling the streets this season.

Peplums have been very popular past summer and they will be as trendy during the Fall/Winter 2012-2013 fashion season. However, you will hardly be able to wear your summer peplums this fall or winter. Fall winter pempluming is darker and classier. They mostly come on cocktail dresses and on tight pencil skirts.

Peplums are fun and Jolly. And they are most certainly not a look that only skinny bitches can wear. Beyoncé looks brilliant in a peplum, and so does Tyra Banks. The whole point of a peplum is that it celebrates a waist-to-hip curve. Of course, some peplums are hideous. As a rule of thumb: if it looks a bit like a unidentified flying object ready to take off, give it a miss.

Leave it to the masters in Milan and Paris, such as Bottega Veneta and Lanvin, who transformed this popular overskirt into an elegantly refined fashion staple, rather than some sort of trendy fashion dare.

According to the catwalks, one popular way for a peplum to be styled was with an above-the-knee skirt, and ankle boots or a sexy heel. Even better wear your peplum with trousers. It immediately modernizes the look. Peplums are here to stay…
