KLM launches free Curaçao Marathon Virtual Coach App

WILLEMSTAD - Are you looking to run your first 5K or set a personal record for a half or full marathon? The free KLM Curacao Marathon app, available in the App store and via Google Play, helps users prepare for and reach their performance goals at any level.

On Friday 20 May, in the presence of members of the press, partners and invitees, Willem Cordilia, chairman of the Curacao Athletics Foundations and race director, presented the free KLM Curacao Marathon ‘Virtual Coach’ app to the athletes who will participate in the KLM Curacao Marathon and the Carifta Games.

Kees van Muiswinkel, chairman and founder of Foundation Run in the Sun, spoke enthusiastically about this unique training tool. He expects many beginning runners to soon use the app and enjoy the many benefits. “I am proud that this ‘Virtual Coach’ is available to everyone who wishes to exercise in a responsible way. Many new runners will experience the joy of sport and a healthier lifestyle. We hope that experienced runners looking to improve their performance will also find their way to this app. My advice is: don’t train harder; train smarter. The app will help you with this.”

The Virtual Coach app is very simple to use. After downloading from the App store or Google Play, users can enter their personal data, distance and performance level. It is even possible to select how many days in the week you would like to train and on which days you are available. The app will create a personalised schedule, give updates the day before training, and let users share their achievements with friends and family via social media. The KLM Curacao Marathon app is created by MYLAPPS.

The third edition of the KLM Curacao Marathon will take place on Sunday 27 November 2016, with the start & finish again being at the Lions Dive & Beach Resort. With five distances on offer – the full marathon, half marathon and 10.5 km trail, as well as 10 and 5 km run or walk – the event offers a challenge for every level of fitness.

During last year’s race, a third of the runners came from abroad, hailing from 34 countries.

“In addition to ensuring a cheerful and sporty atmosphere, guaranteeing the safety of the participants and the public is a major priority,” says Curd Evertsz, head of the Safety and Security Team. “Our dedicated team will be on hand wherever necessary. It will be composed of several partners, including the Police, Royal Netherlands Navy, Red Cross, Blue Cross, FKA, VKC, Brigade di Seguridat, Curmil and CWM.”

Chance to win two return tickets to Amsterdam with KLM
Every participant from Aruba, Bonaire and, of course, Curacao will have the chance to win two return tickets to Amsterdam with KLM in a unique tombola offered by KLM Caribbean.

Boosting the number of participants, companies and schools
The organisers are preparing for up to 3,000 participants. This will guarantee the safety of all runners and supporters along the route, and ensure that the appropriate amount of medals, shirts, water, fruit and sports beverages is available. Kees van Muiswinkel indicates that he expects an increase in both international and local participants. His advice is to register in time to prevent disappointments and ensure your name is printed on one of the start numbers. “Last year we started accepting registration from companies and schools. In addition to price benefits, these organisations enjoyed the convenience of a separate online registration offer. This was very successful and we will continue to offer this opportunity to all companies and schools during the coming event.”

Registration is open! The early bird rate is available until 30 June
Registration is open to all participants as of today; international participants can sign up via the website or official travel partners, while local participants can enrol via Amigoe in Scherpenheuvel or online via They can pay online via credit card or at partners Amigoe and Albert Heijn in Zeelandia in cash. Companies and schools can contact the organisers to register as an organisation.

As was the case with the two previous editions, the 2016 event will be linked to a charity: this year this will be Run 4 School. Participants have the opportunity to make a voluntary donation while registering, which will then be transferred to an elementary school on Curacao.

The KLM Curacao Marathon is facilitated by many partners, sponsors and volunteers.
