KLM visits Coral Restoration Foundation Curacao

KLM 1WILLEMSTAD - The Coral Restoration project near Lions Dive & Beach Resort was visited by members of the KLM Curacao team. The KLM team participated in a Discover Scuba Diving class with Ocean Encounters in order to see the underwater coral nursery first hand. KLM’s aim is to spread awareness for this important project. The Coral Restoration Foundation Curacao (CRFC) was founded in May under Ocean Encounters’ initiative. The project is part of the Coral Restoration Foundation International and essential for restoring Curacao’s shallow water reef system. The importance of a healthy shallow water reef system is for protection of coastal areas and to provide valuable habitats for fish and invertebrates.

The corals for this project were collected from already broken fragments lying on the sea floor. They were then hung in 10 "coral trees" in a "nursery" located in front of the Sea Aquarium beach. The corals are growing incredibly fast, and the expansion of the "nursery" is required to keep up with this significant growth. Once they reach a pre-determined size, they will then be replanted in shallow water to restore the reefs of Curacao. For more information concerning the CRFC please visit
