Promotion policy advisor Gerben Smid

WILLEMSTAD - Gerben Smid, policy advisor to the Attorney General of Curaçao, St. Maarten and the BES islands, recently defended his thesis in Rotterdam. Smid investigated the international obligations to criminalize the bribery of foreign officials.

The thesis, "Bribery punished? International influences on the Criminal Law (foreign) corruption," is written from the Dutch perspective, but the similarities in the legislation are also relevant for Curaçao. The defense took place at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and the promoter of Smid was Professor Hans de Doelder.

Penal Code
In several places particular attention is paid to the Curacao situation and especially the new Penal Code. This has been in force since November 15, 2011. Here is also the law that prisoners sentenced to life after twenty years have a right to be reviewed for possible release. The policy consultant made recommendations for the improvement of legislation and law enforcement practice regarding the fight against bribery.
