Queen’s Day 2013: Curacao Has A King

Brion PlazaQueen’s day (koninginedag) celebrations in Curacao are growing every year. In Curacao it is celebrated every year with a massive flea market in Willemstad and a splash of orange everywhere. This year it was a special Queen’s birthday because Prince Willem Alexander was crowned King. This will mean that things were different this year and they will change in the years to come.

Queen Beatrix ruled the Kingdom of the Netherlands for 33 years. Just like her mother, she passed on the reign before her death. On Queen’s day we celebrate the birthday of the queen. Originally the birthday of Queen Juliana, April 30 was kept as Queen’s day because Princess Beatrix did not want to change it to her birthday in January. With the coronation of the new King this will probably change.

King Willem Alexander’s birthday is on April 27. Everybody is speculating that he will change the celebrations to that day. The name will also have to change to “King’s day”, something everybody will have to get used to.

Curacao celebrated the coronation of the new king with a ceremony on Brionplein. All the territories of the Dutch Kingdom –  The Netherlands, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Statia and St. Maarten – sung the King’s song (koningslied) at the same time. Raising three fingers in the air symbolizing the “W” from Willem Alexander. In Curacao it was 1:30 PM when it happened. A choir dressed in white was led by some singers and rappers.

Orange, the color of the Dutch Kingdom, was to be seen everywhere. Young and old dressed in orange. The color could also be seen on buildings everywhere in Willemstad.

There were different opinions on this coronation. In Curacao there are some people that oppose the celebrations, but overall the public is happy to have a new king. A lot of Curacao locals tweeted they’re remarks. Here are a few local Tweets of what Curacao residents had to say.

Bye Bye to the Dutch Queen Beatrix ,… And welcome to the new King!! King Willem Alexander… #oranjedag
