Zus di Plasa – 52 years the most famous cook on the island
WILLEMSTAD – Last Saturday the most well-known cook on the island celebrated her birthday, I’m not allowed to say how “young” she is, but also remarkable was that she celebrated her 52nd year cooking at Plasa Bieu for everyone who wants to savor a good local dish. She cooks for everyone, locals and visitors. They all love her dishes.
Zus di Plaza, that’s what they call her, is actually not only her name, but also synonym to good “krioyo” food. She’s the last kitchen in the Plasa Bieu (Old Plaza) if you enter from the Post Office side. You will have to fight your way through the other kitchens who will try to get you to eat their food. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they have good food too, but nothing beats Zus di Plasa.
Zus di Plasa started 52 years ago helping her mother after school. After a few years, she took over the kitchen. Her mother was assigned as the cashier. Now Zus’ daughter is also helping her mother. This is good news because it means that the family tradition will continue.
The employees arrive at the crack of dawn at Plasa Bieu to start preparing the dishes for the lunch crowd. Mind you, they only serve lunch. For those who like to eat a heavy meal for dinner, you are out of luck at Plasa Bieu. The ingredients are purchased on a daily basis to guarantee fresh, appetizing meals. Zus di Plasa offers local favorites like stewed salted pork tales, salted mackerel, head and liver stew, cactus soup, red kidney bean soup, okra soup, green been stew, conch stew and many more. But if you want to keep it simple there is chicken stew, beef or fish soup and chicken soup. Make sure you save room for dessert, the famous pumpkin fritters.
It’s a delight to eat at Zus di Plasa. It’s definitely not a place for those who are on a diet.
Congratulations Zus di Plasa. I really enjoyed my okra soup.
