Mayank Thammalla, an architecture student who grew up in New Zealand, created the “swim or sink” mayank-thammalia-maldives-6project for his Masters of Architecture thesis, he imagined a semi submersible oil rigs built for permanent human habitation with a special environment created to be as natural as possible, with places of worship ,markets and shops; Maldives is a small island nation located in the south western part of India, that has the lowest average ground elevation in the world,1.5 meters above sea level and this is of great concern to its people.

Mayank wanted through his project to save and preserve up to 2000 year old culture and unique identity ;satellite measurements tells that the annual rate of water rise over the past 20 years has been 3.2 millimeters a year, and the islands will continually sink deeper.
