If you look in the dictionary for a definition of (or more likely Google) the word, "paradise," you most likely would find the Caribbean island of Curacao. Located just off the coast of Venezuela and near its more famous neighbor island, Aruba, Curacao combines perfect weather with pristine beaches and colorful Dutch colonial architecture.
Seeking to escape the possibility of the November cold in Lincoln, my wife Jane and I and four other couples began looking for a Caribbean escape almost a year in advance of our 2015 trip. We found Sirena Bay Estate (Sirenabay.com), a beautifully restored 18th century estate in Willemstad, the capital city of Curacao.
Owned and managed by American ex-pats Dick and Marilyn Schanze, Sirena Bay was in 2012 a location for the ABC television reality show, "The Bachelorette." Emily Maynard didn't find her true love there, though, but the friendly staff, clean accommodations and spectacular view from the patio and balcony must have soothed some of the hurt.
