July recorded 5% more stay over visitors

4% more visitor nights in the first seven months of 2014

curacao-willemstadThe preliminary stay over arrivals increased by 5% compared to the same month of 2013. The visitor statistics collected by the CTB show that 36.841 stay over visitors arrived to the island in July 2014. In 2013 CTB recorded 35.196 stay over visitors in the same month. Compared to July 2012, CTB recorded a growth of 3% more stay over visitors.

Most of the visitors come from Europe (41.3%). The region provided a total of 15.241 stay over arrivals compared to the 14.248 recorded in July 2013. The European market recorded a 7% increase. The main producing country, The Netherlands increased by 8% with 12.133 in July 2014 compared to 11.191 in 2013. Germany increased recording 10% more visitors in July 2014. A total of 1.098 German visitors were welcomed. Last year this same month recorded 1.000 German visitors.

The South American region registered 11.327 stay over arrivals in July 2014. A total growth of 24%, in absolute numbers 2.164 more visitors. Venezuela registered positive figures recording 7.907 stay over arrivals. The main reason of the positive performance is that the seat capacity from Venezuela is now comparable with the capacity in July 2013. Last year we registered from Venezuela 5.709
stay over visitors, a 39% growth. Brazil registered a 27% increase in visitor arrivals and Colombia registered 5% less visitor arrivals.

12.5% of the visitors in July 2014 are residents of the North American continent. Stay over arrivals from North America decreased by 24.7% in July with a total of 4.592 visitors compared to the 6.100 visitor arrivals of July 2013. The United States with 4.371 stay over arrivals recorded a 25% decrease. With the announcement of JetBlue starting as of December 2nd of this year, CTB still faces some challenges with regard to airlift for the remainder of this year from this region. Being well aware of this situation, CTB is working on numerous marketing initiatives to alleviate this situation.

Stay over visitors to Curaçao from the Caribbean region decreased by 15.34% in July 2014. A total of 3.329 visitors were registered. Aruba registered a decrease of 17%. In 2014, 1.710 arrivals have been recorded from this country.

Year to Date Figures: January through July 2014

The overall stay over arrivals in the first seven months of 2014 recorded a decrease of 2%. All together, 246.823 stay over visitors were welcomed during the first seven months of 2014. In 2013 Curaçao welcomed 251.727 stay over visitors. The European region registered 6% more visitors in the first seven months of 2014. A total of 107.618 European visitors were registered during this
period. Last year in the same period CTB counted 101.860 stay over visitors from the European region. The South and North American region decreased by 6% and 13%. Respectively we registered 65.640 South Americans and 40.015 North American visitors during the first seven months. The Caribbean region decreased by 15%, during the first seven months of the year and we welcomed 19.149 visitors from our neighbor islands.

Utilizing the ‘Turistika Model’, CTB and MEO calculated that for the first seven months of 2014 the tourism sector was directly responsible for generating $230.3 million US dollars into the local economy. Last year the same period generated a total of $229.9 million US dollars. European stay over visitors, who visited Curaçao in greater numbers during the first seven months of 2014, spent
a total $109.0 million US dollars, about 47.3% of the total. They were followed by the South Americans who spent $55.9 million US dollars and the North Americans who spent $42.6 million US dollars. The Caribbean visitors spent a total of $12.8 million US dollars in 2014.

The fact that Europeans flocked in greater numbers to our island also resulted in an increase of 7% in overall nights during the first seven months. Europeans spent on average more nights compared to the other regions. All together visitors stayed 2.231.233 nights in Curaçao compared to 2.144.775 nights in the first seven months of 2013. The European region recorded significant growth in total
visitor nights with a 7% increase and 1.219.795 registered nights. In absolute figures this region claims the greatest share of visitor arrivals causing a positive impact on the overall number of nights. Moreover, Europeans spent on average more nights compared to the other regions. The South American region recorded an 8% increase in visitor nights. In absolute numbers 496.334 nights were registered during the first seven months of 2014. This is 37.243 more visitor nights than last year. North America and the Caribbean recorded less visitor nights, respectively 8% and 16% less. Thus, in absolute number a total of 287.593 and 127.022 visitor nights.
