Scuba Lodge Dive Center Pietermaai organized successful cleaning dive

CleanUpDiveJune2018 (1)WILLEMSTAD - The dive action at Marichi last Sunday with 14 experienced divers was successful. This is according to Daan Drechsel, Manager of Scuba Lodge Dive Center Pietermaai. The volunteers who participated in the cleaning dive consist of local divers and tourists from America, France and the Netherlands.

"We get a lot of positive feedback from our cleaning dives, and two California participants have extended their vacation specifically to take part in this clean-up dive last weekend," Drechsel says proudly. "But besides the cleaning activity, it was also a pleasant afternoon CleanUpDiveJune2018 (4)with a motivated group with the same goal: leaving the sea cleaner than we see it."

The participating divers have mainly cleaned up fishing equipment at Marichi. It concerns fishing lines, hooks, nets and other dirt that fishermen leave unintentionally on the reefs. This material poses a serious threat to sea turtles and other underwater life. The divers also found a car tire, different bottles and a lot of plastic waste.

Since last year, Scuba Lodge Dive Center Pietermaai is organizing a clean-up dive every first Sunday of the month in collaboration with Project AWARE, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the underwater world through information, lobby and action. The next cleaning dive of Scuba Lodge Dive Center Pietermaai will take place on Sunday, July 1, 2018.
