Second edition of the KLM Curaçao Marathon

KLM CM 02(L)WILLEMSTAD - Sunday 29 November 2015 will see the second edition of the KLM Curaçao Marathon take place in Willemstad on Curaçao. The event is being organized by the Run in the Sun foundation.

Participants will be able to choose from a variety of distances: a 5 km walk or run, a 10 km walk or run, a half or a whole marathon, or a trail of 10.5 or 16.65 km. The organizers have set a target of doubling the number of registrations compared to the first edition and have indicated they are on track with runners from 16 countries already signed up.

A premiere: the free KLM Curaçao Marathon app

The KLM Curaçao Marathon app provides all the relevant information about the event. A unique feature is the possibility for family, friends and fans around the world to follow their favourite runners in real time via a GPS connection and Track & Trace. Even runners without a smartphone can be followed step by step thanks to the bib tag, a unique chip given to each participant. The app was developed in collaboration with the partner Mylaps and can be downloaded free as of today.

KLM CM 03Route

The route has been certified by AIMS. The starting point is the Lions Dive Hotel & Beach Resort. Half and full-marathon participants will run along the waterfront of Curaçao. They will cross the famous Queen Emma Bridge (a pontoon bridge) and the Queen Juliana Bridge (at 56.4 metres above sea level the highest bridge in the world, and not normally accessible to pedestrians). The famous Handelskade quay will also be part of the route.

The hotels situated along the route – Bon Bini Seaside Resort, Dolphin Suites, Kontiki, Sunscape Resorts, Avila Hotel, Renaissance Resort, Sonesta Kura Hulanda, Holiday Beach, Hilton, Floris Suite, Acoya, Santa Barbara Beach, Papagayo, Blue Bay, Jan Thiel Livingstone, Sunscape and  Dolphins Suite – will support the event with water stations, Caribbean music and transfers between the accommodation and the marathon starting point.

Radio Dolfijn and Curom Broadcasting will cover the event, giving people to chance to follow it from home. A sound permit covering the whole route has been granted.

Start and finish

The evening preceding the event will see a traditional pasta party prepared with the cooperation of Michelin star chef and marathon runner Pascal Jalhay. The finish will be followed by an after-party on one of the island’s most popular beaches, which promises to be a true Caribbean festival with local bands and artists.

Each participant will receive a start number with time registration, a t-shirt, a medal and the app. Results will be available immediately after the finish online on the site and via the app.


The Run in the Sun foundation aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among young and old in Curaçao. The high quality standard of the marathon has given it considerable appeal to international participants and contributes to the promotion of tourism in Curaçao. The board of the foundation consists of founders Kees van Muiswinkel and Martin Does.

KLM CM 01(L)The KLM Curaçao Marathon is organized in cooperation with the Curaçao Tourist Board, the Athletics Federation of Curaçao and the Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association, among others. There is also a partnership with the Royal Dutch Navy, which will support the trails in particular. The new distance being introduced in 2015, the 16.65 km trail, refers to the year 1665, in which Michiel de Ruyter founded the Netherlands Marine Corps.


The Run in the Sun foundation will link the KLM Curaçao Marathon 2015 to Run 4 Books!, a charity which aims to encourage children of primary school age in Curaçao to read (or read more) by offering them fun children's books. Runners can make a donation during registration or contribute a new or used children's book at the front desk of participating hotels.

KLM as title sponsor

KLM Nederland will be the title sponsor of the event. A popular sport among many of KLM's most loyal customers, running is growing in popularity worldwide. Moreover, KLM is committed to the social role of the event, which encourages young and old to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle.
