Start of third edition of KLM Curaçao marathon – Chance to win two KLM tickets to Amsterdam

KLM MarathonWILLEMSTAD - On Thursday 3 March, Virginia Constansia, two-time participant and the public face of the KLM Curacao Marathon 2015, gave the symbolic starting shot to open the registration for the third edition of KLM Curacao Marathon in the presence of members of the press, partners and invitees.

The third consecutive edition of the KLM Curacao Marathon will take place on Sunday 27 November 2016, with the start & finish again being the Lions Dive & Beach Resort. With five distances on offer – the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10.5 KM Trail, and a 10 KM and 5 KM Run or Walk – the event offers a perfect challenge for every level of fitness.

Kees van Muiswinkel, chairman and founder of Foundation Run in the Sun, enthusiastically presented the goals for the coming edition and what Curacao and the participants could expect.

“Last year saw an excellent growth of the event with 2,200 registrations, including 700 participants from 34 different countries, and 1,500 from Curacao. For various reasons we were very fortunate with the eventual winner of the Full Marathon, Tomi Halme from Finland. Firstly, his record time of 2:50:33 proved that achieving a good time is possible on Curacao. Moreover, welcoming a participant from Finland confirms the international attraction of the sports event.

“Tomi said it was his first visit to the Caribbean and that he and his girlfriend combined participation in the race with a relaxing holiday on Curacao. They also stated how much they loved the experience of running with so many locals. Tomi personifies the two main goals of the KLM Curacao Marathon: stimulating sports, exercise and a healthy lifestyle on Curacao on the one hand, and encouraging tourism to the island on the other.”

Kees van Muiswinkel also showed a personal video message from Tomi Halme in which he complemented the organisers and challenged local and international participants to beat his time. “We have had great reactions from the participants to the improvements and innovations we implemented,” Van Muiswinkel added. “The success of last year’s event will therefore form the basis for the further development of the organisation of the third edition in the hope that we will welcome even more participants on the start line.”

Willem Cordilia, chairman of the Curacao Athletics Foundations and event race director, emphasised that the ingredients which make the event so unique will be upheld, including:

  • A suitable distance for everyone with five different options.
  • Choice between four road races and a trail race.
  • The choice between running and walking the 5 and 10 KM.
  • Diverse participation: international & local, men & women, young & old.
  • Every participant receives a personal (bib) start number, online time registration, a cotton event T-shirt and luxury medal; there are more than enough water stations with sports beverages, fruit  and the like.
  • Everyone who registers in time receives a start number with their name and a listing in the Amigoe newspaper.
  • Great route past the touristic highlights of Willemstad and music along the route.
  • Free app with ‘Live Track & Trace’, allowing family and friends to follow the participants.
  • Free certificate with name and distance for each participant.
  • Joint finish of all distances on the beach, followed by the award presentation for numbers one to three, and an after-party on the beach.
  • Optional: Dry Fit Running shirt, Movie Night on the Beach, Pasta Party, Finish photo & video.

In addition to ensuring a celebratory and sporty atmosphere, the safety of the participants and the public is a major priority. A dedicated Safety & Security Team will be in place composed of the various partners, including the Police, Royal Netherlands Navy and Red Cross.

Chance to win 2 KLM return tickets to Amsterdam

Pieter de Man, KLM’s regional general manager Caribbean & Suriname, says that Curacao has been an important KLM destination for many years. “The title sponsorship of this unique event is perfectly in line with our goals to stimulate tourism to the island as well as sports and exercise.”

To top it all, De Man announced that every participant from Aruba, Bonaire and, of course, Curacao has the chance to win two KLM return tickets to Amsterdam in a unique tombola, offered by KLM Curacao.

Increasing participants, companies and schools

The organisers are preparing for a growth to a maximum of 3,000 participants. This will guarantee the safety of all runners and supporters along the route, and ensure that the proper amount of medals, shirts, water, fruit and sports beverages are available. Kees van Muiswinkel indicated that he expects an increase of both international and local participants. His advice is to register in time to prevent disappointments and ensure your name is printed on one of the start numbers.

“Last year we started with the registration of companies and schools. In addition to price benefits, the organisations enjoyed the ease of a separate online registration offer. This was very successful and we will be offering the opportunity to all companies and schools for the coming event.”

Registration is open

Registration is open to all participants as of today; international participants via the or Official Travel Partners, and local participants via Amigoe in Scherpenheuvel or online via with the option of paying online via credit card or cash at partners Amigoe or Albert Heijn in Zeelandia. Companies and schools can contact the organisers to register as an organisation.

As was the case with the two previous editions, the 2016 event will be linked to a charity, which this year is Run 4 School. Participants have the opportunity to make a voluntary donation when registering, which will then be donated to an elementary school on Curacao.

Partners, sponsors and volunteers

The KLM Curacao Marathon is facilitated by many partners, sponsors and volunteers. In addition to KLM as title sponsor, this includes Cavalier, Intertrust, Royal Navy Netherlands, and Albert Heijn Zeelandia as sponsors of the individual distances, and a close cooperation with the Curacao Tourist Board, Curacao Athletics Foundation, Start & Finish Hotel Lions Dive & Beach Resort, Official Hotel Partners, Curacao Ports Authority and many other partners.

The organisers wish everyone the best possible preparations for taking part in the third edition of the KLM Curacao Marathon and look forward to working with all partners and volunteers to ensure a successful event.
