The Month of June has shown an increase of 5 percent in tourism

WillemstadWILLEMSTAD- According to information from Immigration which was compiled by the Curacao Tourism Board (CTB), it can be announced that the preliminary figures for the month of June shows that 32,944 stay over tourists have visited Curacao. This was 5% more than the same month last year. In 2012 it was 31,317 during the same month.

The visitors from North America were the same compared to the month of June of last year which is 6,192 from this region. Figures for visitors from the U.S. have registered 0% which is equivalent to 5,973. Canada has registered an increase of 10% for the month of June 2013.

The South American market has seen an increase of 4% in the month of June 2013 with a total of 9,398 visitors compared to 9,066 in 2012. There were a total of 5,882 visitors registered from Venezuela. This is a decrease of 5%. According to the CTB, this decrease is a direct cause of the suspension of the Dutch Antilles Express flights to and from Venezuela since May 15, 2013. Previously the effects were not felt since the first two weeks in May 2013 were positive compared to the same season the previous year.

The other countries in South America like Suriname and Colombia have registered an increase in visitors. These were respectively 54% and 31%. The absolute figures from the secondary countries in South America have a registered 924 and 1,124 stay over tourists.

The European market has registered 0% in June 2013; this has brought a total of 11,872 visitors to Curacao. The country which normally brings the most tourists is the Netherlands with a decrease of 2% in the month of June. For this month, Curacao has received 9,418 visitors from the Netherlands, compared to 9,589 in June 2012. Germany has dropped by 2%, equivalent to 928 visitors, last year it was 943. ‘Stay over’ from the Caribbean has gone up by 21% in the month of June. The visitors from Aruba have increased by 9%, equivalent to 1,953. From the Dominican Republic, there were 585 tourists, equivalent to an increase of 100%.

‘Year to Date’ figures

The first 6 months of the year, 215,447 tourists have visited Curacao. Last year CTB has registered during the same period 202,137 stay over tourists. This is an increase of 7% compared to the figures from 2012; in the absolute figures the registered increase is equivalent to 13,310 tourists more than the previous year.

The North American region has gone up by 3% during the first 6 months of 2013. A total of 39,462 visitors from that region were registered. The region of South America has seen an increase of 19% through the month of June 2013 with a total of 60,532 tourists from this region who visited Curacao compared to 18,462 from last year during the same period. This is a small increase of 1%. The European continent has registered 3% less compared to the first 6 months of last year, in absolute numbers this is 87,240 compared to 90,108 in 2012.

The total nights tourists have stayed in Curacao has seen a small increase of 1%. In total tourists have stayed 1,821,780 nights in Curacao, this is during the first 6 months of 2013. For the North American region the numbers have diminished by 3%. Visitors from South America have increased their nights on the island by 10%. In the Caribbean there was also a small increase of 1% registered during the same period. The European continent has registered 5% less nights during the same period.
