Tourism: North American Region increased by 8%

WillemstadWILLEMSTAD - Stay over arrivals from North America increased by 8% in January with a total of 8.585 visitors compared to the 7.936 visitor arrivals in January 2015. The United States with 5.155 stay over arrivals recorded a 2% increase. This year’s performance from the US market is relatively stable compared to last year. We can clearly see the importance of adequate airlift to increase visitor arrivals from the USA. Canada recorded a 20% increase with 3.430 stay over arrivals this January 2016. This increase is directly attributable to the start of the weekly service from Toronto with Air Transat. The addition of Air Transat combined with marketing actions with partners in the tourism industry marked a notable improvement in performance out of Canada.

The European market recorded a 4% growth in January 2016. The region provided a total of 18.795 stay over arrivals compared to the 18.068 recorded in January 2015. The main producing country, The Netherlands increased slightly by 1% with 14.139 in January 2016 compared to 13.935 in 2015. Germany also grew recording a 3% increase in January 2016. A total of 1.594 visitors were welcomed. Last year this same month recorded 1.555 German visitors.

The South American market decreased by 26% in January 2016, with a total of 9.793 stay over arrivals compared to 13.227 in 2015. From Venezuela a 30% decrease is registered, a total of 6.283 visitors were counted in January of this year. It is known that the inflation rate in Brazil is high after the government imposed several tax increases aiming to balance the overall budget while a weak Brazilian Real pushes the import prices up. The Brazilian Real fell around 47% to the US Dollar in 2015. The economic crisis reflects back in the visitor arrivals from Brazil. In January 2016 the CTB reports 40% less visitors, which in absolute numbers amounts to 1.053 stay over arrivals. The Colombian Peso is also opposing a strong US Dollar, but fortunately the ‘Curaçao Sin Visa’ campaign is still stimulating positive growth from this country. Colombia grew by 8% in January 2016, with a total of 1.208 visitors.

Stay over visitors to Curaçao from the Caribbean region decreased by 9% in January 2016. A total of 2.234 visitors were registered. Aruba registered a decrease of 20%. In 2015 1.330 arrivals were recorded from Aruba. This year a total of 1.070 Arubans are registered.

A slight decrease of 2% is registered in the first month of the year 2016. The Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) reports 734 less visitors in January 2016. All together a total of 41.696 visitors were registered. In January of 2015, stay over visitors numbered 42.430.
