Dutch TV explains about the use of the concepts of Dutch and Antillean

Curacao baseball playersTHE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The NOS received several questions about the use of the concepts of Dutch and Antillean in our broadcasts and on our site.

First, it should be noted that Antillean people are Dutch. They carry Dutch passports. The fact that we sometimes interchange these concepts has nothing to do with racism or prejudice. We sometimes interchange these concepts if it is of relevance to the news item in question. It boils down to a journalistic choice, not a principle.

In the case of human trafficking, we mentioned it because a number of people of Antillean origin were deliberately focusing on Antillean people.

In sports reports as well reference is regularly made to the performance of Antilleans and we assume that this is of relevance, e.g. specifically in relation to this topic:
The text featured on this topic literally states: 'almost all baseball players were born in the Netherlands Antilles'. And a list of players is included with their backgrounds, where it is clearly indicated that most are of Antillean origin.
