Curacao will sell itself as a connection between the Chinese and South American markets

ChinaWILLEMSTAD – Curacao will sell itself as a country which can connect the billion dollar Chinese economic market with the Latin American countries. If Curacao can get at least 1% of this market activity, this could mean a major impulse for our country. Minister Dr. Steven Martina will head a delegation traveling to two important cities in China.

The economic mission will take place from May 6 till the 11. It’s a mission organized by the Foundation Logistical Sector Development (SLS) in cooperation with the Melenco organization. Minister Steven Martina received an official invitation to lead the delegation on behalf of the Government of Curacao.

On Monday May 6, there will be a presentation from Curacao’s most important economic sectors to the Chinese business world. SLS President, Arthur Adam and  Chamber of Commerce President, Billy Jonckheer will give the presentation and there will be various presentations where Curacao will get the opportunity to present itself.

Research indicates that Chinese commerce sees Curacao as a potential place from which they could serve the Latin American market. If consider that China is one of the most potential investor in the world, this economic mission is a major strategic importance.

Minister Martina sees his visit to China as a unique opportunity to strategically capture the attention and interest of the private sector and media in Beijing and Shanghai.

There are various motives why this economic mission to China is important:

  • China occupies the first place in the world market in import and export of 3870 billion dollars;
  • During the strategic session “How to present the Dutch Kingdom” China was indicated as a priority market;
  • Recently China informed that they will open a Consulate General in Curacao;
  • Minister Martina will serve as keynote speaker during two conferences; “Invest in Curacao” in which the Kingdom Ambassador will also speak;
  • Presence of Minister Martina will give the delegation the opportunity to participate in official meetings with Chinese government officials;
  • For the delegation, participation of the Minister is a condition for the private sector to penetrate in the highest level of the Chinese private sector;
  • The economic mission to China is considered a preparation to maximize the Dutch mission to China headed by the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in July of this year;
  • There are 150 Chinese companies have shown interest to do business via Curacao;
  • During the economic mission to China, there will be concrete talks with Shanghai Investment Promotion Bureay and Beijing Investment Promotion Bureau for the next time China has its economic mission to the Caribbean region and for the possibility to visit Curacao.
