VBC skeptical about Palm’s projection

WILLEMSTAD – The Curacao Business Association (VBC) is very skeptical about Minister Stanley Palm’s projection on the growth of the economy.  The Minister of Economic Development expects a small increase in the economy based on new projects in the tourism sector.

“There are a few projects that should start soon. If they do start then this would be a great success for us. There are also some projects from the government, e.g. the new hospital, which will also generate many activities. If it will generate directly, that remains to be seen, because this is just a prediction. Till last year we registered, once again, a small decrease in the GDP. Even though this decrease was smaller than previous years, it is still a negative trend. We really need some growth,” Herman Behr, VBC’s chairman, said.

“This growth can come from the private sector, Chamber of Commercewhich now has some projects. There are many projects that are stuck because of the government regulations or that have some problems with their finances. There are many investors or project developers who are waiting for their necessary permits. As the VBC’s chairman and the VBC as an organization representing the business community on the island we are against the government’s involvement in the private sector,” Behr indicated.

“When the government limits its involvement, then you can see opportunities. These opportunities bring growth for the economy,” Behr stated.
