More than half of the population is overweight

bellyWILLEMSTAD - 62.6 percent of men and 67.3 percent of women suffers from overweight or obesity. This means that more than 30 thousand men and more than 40 thousand women aged eighteen and older are overweight. This is according to a report from the Curacao Public Health Institute  (VIC).

Also apparent from the 2013 National Health Interview Survey that men who have a net monthly income of ten thousand guilders or more, are fatter than men who earn less. The report was recently presented to the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Ben Whiteman.

Abdominal obesity

There was also a research on abdominal obesity. This is another way to measure obesity, and it indicates the risk of cardiovascular complications. 53.1 percent of the adult population suffers from this kind of obesity. In addition, the VIC stressed that obesity is preventable by adopting a healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating and exercise.
