Court: Schotte must pay or go to prison

Gerrit-Schotte-Foto-ANPWILLEMSTAD - Gerrit Schotte, the former prime minister of Curaçao, must pay 1,844,190 guilders (one million dollars). If he does not pay or does not pay on time, he has to go to prison for three years.

This ruling in a so-called confiscation case is a consequence of the Babel case. In that case, Schotte was convicted in an appeal last year for accepting bribes, forgery and money laundering. He received three years in prison, of which six months were conditional. The public prosecution wanted to reclaim the money, and also more improperly the illegally obtained money. That is why the confiscation case started.

The public prosecutor also demanded that the life partner of Schotte, Cicely van der Dijs, repay more than 200,000 guilders. The judge, however, acquitted her of that claim.

Schotte is still out of prison. He went to the Supreme Court last year with the Babel case. The highest judicial entity of the Kingdom must still rule in this case. Until that time he is a free man.
