CTB loses case on room tax

WILLEMSTAD – Curacao Tourism Bureau (CTB) has lost a major lawsuit in connection with the room tax.

For years various local hotels and resorts battled against what they considered unequal treatment with regards to the room tax load. The CTB and the government have not shunned harsh means against the warring hotels in the hunt for the millions of dollars in room tax.

The Court of First Instance in Curacao has now upheld the appeal of the warring hotels, a new and major setback for the CTB, after recently became known that some of room tax promised by the ex-Minister of Economic Development and Tourism Mr. Nasser El Hakim may not be used. The tourist office is facing huge financial deficits and will have to cut back on most of their spending including the promotion of Curacao in major countries.
