Hefty fine for import counterfeit items

CourtWILLEMSTAD – The Owner (72) of Curacao Freezone Distributors Inc appeared before a judge on Friday for importing counterfeit goods. The customs confiscated, during a raid in the free zone, 8.5 million cigarettes with the Marlboro brand, 414 boxes of t-shirts with the brand La Coste, 404 boxes of jeans with the brand Calvin Klein and 800 boxes of shirts with the brand Armani. This was reported by the Public Prosecution (OM).

Given the age of the owner the prosecutor did not demand jail, but a suspended sentence of six months and a fine of 25,000 guilders. A fine of 50,000 guilders has been demanded against the company. The Court will rule on this case in about two weeks.
