Navarro: “102 illegal weapons turned in”

Nelson NavarroWILLEMSTAD - Until now, the grace period, in which people who are in possession of an illegal firearm can surrender these to the Public Prosecutor (OM) and receive for 100 guilders, has produced 102 illegal firearms, four shotguns, and ammunitions. The Minister of Justice said, during the Public meeting of parliament to be very happy with the amount of weapons that were turned in during this grace period. But he also indicated that he would not have been too concerned if the number was zero.

“The goal is that everyone finally realizes that the authorities will take action against owners of illegal firearms after September 1,” the Minister of Justice said. "This grace period has been specially created for decent people to have the opportunity to surrender their weapons without being prosecuted for this. But after September 1, we will no longer tolerate the possession of illegal firearms. You can be a criminal or a Member of Parliament; if you are in possession of an illegal firearm and you get caught, you have big problems,” the Minister said to the MPs.
