Preliminary report Pretu’s death is ready

Court houseWILLEMSTAD - The report of the committee who did the research on the death of Luigi 'Pretu' Florentina is completed and submitted to parliament on November 4. It is a preliminary report, which is still secret. The committee did not investigate the alleged suicide of Pretu itself, but only the circumstances surrounding his detention and eventual death.

There is also a judicial inquiry into Pretu’s death. This investigation is carried out by the Police Corps Curaçao and Investigation team. Pretu was the main suspect in the death of the late political leader Helmin Wiels. He was also considered the key witness in this investigation.

Pareto was detained in the Navy barracks at Suffisant under strict surveillance. His attorney requested his transfer from the barracks to a police detention center. This request was honored by the court of justice in Willemstad. Pretu then committed suicide in his cell just a few weeks after he was transferred.

The Minister of Justice installed a committee of experts to investigate the situation at the detention center in Barber where Pretu was being held to find out the circumstances surrounding his death.
