Prison guards intercept drones with drugs and telephones

Prison CuracaoWILLEMSTAD - Guards from the SDKK prison have intercepted two drones last weekend. These drones flew over the grounds and dropped drugs and telephones during the recreational time of the prisoners.

This is according to SDKK director Urny Florán. How the drones were intercepted, he does not want to say. “But it went very fast. One of the drones had five phones, the other drugs.”

During a cell visit, which followed the interception of the drones, guards found 27 mobile phones, large quantities of drugs, three screwdrivers and a pair of pincers. Florán observes a growing supply through the air. “Right above the prison is a no-fly zone, but our prison is on the edge of the Koraalspecht district.” According to the director, it is fairly easy to control a drone from the nearby houses.

“First that happened at night, but now just during the day. We have not yet succeeded in arresting the ones controlling the drones.” The prison is in consultation with the Ministry of Justice in Willemstad to take measures. This could be frequency jammers, for example, which can disrupt the control of a drone.

Florán does not want to go into that specific suggestion. There are 425 prisoners in the SDKK prison.
