Requests suspension detention in case Helmin Wiels dismissed

Court of JusticeWILLEMSTAD - Judge Van Dam Ijsselt dismissed the requests for the suspension of detention until next session. During the pro-forma session of the Wiels case in which four suspects are standing trial, the lawyers asked for suspension of detention of two suspects. The judge looked at the severity of the objections and also social safety.

This is in accordance with the request of the public prosecutor, who believes that the safety of the accused can be in jeopardy if the detention is suspended. “A number of suspects are no longer alive; these defendants should be kept secure.”

The court cannot make a decision on the request for transfer to other detention facilities. “That must be done by the Public Prosecution. This could happen during the treatment of the substantive matter.” In addition, the court investigation wishes to hear more witnesses and also prepare a psychological or psychiatric report. This involves investigation requested by the lawyers of the accused Elvis 'Monster' Kuwas and Dangelo Damascus. These cases are referred back to the magistrate.

The second part of the pro-forma session is on April 16, 2014 at 09.30 am. The substantive case is spread over three days and will take place on May 21, 22 and 23, 2014. The court is also considering to possibility to hold the court session at another location so more people can attend.
