Businesses: ‘Insufficient pocket change in Curacao’

Curacao StatisticsWILLEMSTAD - Payment traffic in Curacao suffers from a lack of pocket change. This is according to the Curacao Business Association (VBC). Especially supermarkets and retailers are the victims. The VBC has asked the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) and the Minister of Finance for a solution.

The VBC has proposed to abolish the cents and round everything up to five cents. The quantity of physical money should stay at accepted levels to avoid shortage. The CBCS is primarily responsible for putting money on the market.

The VBC is worried. "These customers are entitled to their change, but with the correct amount, especially now that they have to be careful on how to spend their money. The last thing business owners want is to have disputes with customers and to be accused of not giving the correct amount. It should also be noted that these discussions have become more frequent in practice.”
