CAP: “Drastic action by ROP halts air-conditioning project”

AirportconstructionWILLEMSTAD - With only two days left of construction work and an opening celebration planned for Thursday July 17th, CAP was surprised with the announcement by ROP (Ruimtelijke Ontwikkeling en Planning)  that the construction work had to be stopped per immediately. CAP paid ROP for the permit on May the 27th 2014, but unfortunately CAP missed one administrative document regarding the ownership of the building that is presently ready to be submitted.

Curaçao Airport Partners is currently improving the Airport Experience for passengers, visitors and airport employees by investing 10 million dollars in 2014 on airport developments through various grand projects, among others the cooling and expansion of the Check-In hall, also known as the Airport Air-conditioning project. It is therefore that Tuesday’s drastic action by ROP caught CAP by surprise.  The completion of the project is on schedule and would be ready on Thursday for the opening event. ROP representatives appeared on the construction site and offered CAP less than half a day to file the missing document. This is something that could have been done differently. ROP usually advices on missing items needed for obtaining a building which should be confirmed in writing to CAP as soon as possible so CAP can comply or adapt its construction plans as to avoid unnecessary delay and inconvenience to the public.

CAP would like to emphasize that safety and security are not the issue. The halting of the construction work is due to administrative paperwork regarding ownership of the building (derived from Development, Operation and Maintenance Agreement) that needed to be submitted again as previously done with other similar applications.

Major Airport projects with a positive impact on the way

CAP recognizes that it needed to have submitted the required information correctly. But all was done in good faith without ill intentions.  ROP is doing its work and CAP understands that. CAP will do all in its power to make sure that the work will be resumed as soon as possible and is extremely grateful for the cooperation it is receiving from all partners, ministries, governmental companies and more.  CAP is also proud of the local contractors whom complied with an ambitious time schedule during this project.  Currently CAP is about to commence construction of other major projects at the airport including  the New Mirador, the General Aviation Center for private planes, the Airport Expansion project , all projects  that will have a positive impact on Curaçao and the Airport Experience. CAP indicates it will assure all appropriate documents will be submitted in time and complete in order for the airport expansion and improvement projects to continue as planned in order to offer passengers and visitors an improved Airport Experience.
