Chikungunya is here to stay

Byron MartinaWILLEMSTAD - Now that the chikungunya virus has been detected on the island, we will have to live with its presence. According to the virologist, Byron Martina, it was never possible to fully eradicate a virus that has popped up somewhere.

The chikungunya virus had long been active in countries in Africa and Asia, but due to the intense traffic between the continents the disease is also found elsewhere for now, including Curacao. The virus is transmitted by the same mosquito that spreads dengue, the so caled tiger mosquito.

Chikungunya is less dangerous than dengue. Only rarely you will find that someone dies from the disease, and if Chikungunya virusthat happens, it has to do with complication factors, which already weakened the immune system. People who are more at risk include patients with diabetes, rheumatism or HIV, and the elderly. People who have this virus will have to rest so they can recuperate.

Martina, who lives and works in Europe, said further that the probability for the deadly disease, Ebola to emerge here is very small, but not impossible.
