Fear of chaos around Venezuela elections

Maduro-Venezuela-1THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The rising tension surrounding the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela may lead to an additional influx of refugees to Curacao and Aruba.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes into account serious disturbances and has, therefore, tightened the travel advice for our neighboring country.

"The presidential elections will be held on 20 May 2018. In the period before these elections, it will become more restless and the number of protests will increase. There is a good chance that there will be violence around demonstrations," said the ministry, which strongly advises against traveling to Venezuela anyway. The negative travel advice applies to the entire country.

If the elections in favor of President Nicolás Maduro fail, it will lead to a new wave of demonstrations. "These can lead to confrontations and violence," according to Foreign Affairs. But even if Maduro loses the election, chaos threatens. Observers assume that he will not leave the field without a struggle and invoke the help of the army.
