Fee increase pro deo lawyers a difficult case

courthouse-1WILLEMSTAD - Increasing the compensation for attorneys that provide legal assistance to indigent or less fortunate is a tricky business. This is according to the new president of the Common Court of Justice, Evert-Jan van der Poel during a radio interview.

Lawyers who provide legal assistance to the less fortunate get there are currently about 900 guilders (about 515 U.S. dollars). This is irrespective of the number of hours and the importance of the case. The Dean of the Bar Association, Caroline Fievez called last Friday during the installation of the new President of the Court to increase and indexation of this fee. According to Fievez this amount has been frozen for about fifteen years now. The fee is far below the rate of a lawyer and the danger that lawyers will give preference to paying clients which may affect the fundamental right of the less fortunate, according to Fievez.
