His Excellency King Willem-Alexander revealed the name plate of Mega Pier Tula.

CPA_TulaWILLEMSTAD - On July 1st, His Excellency King Willem-Alexander revealed the name plate of Mega Pier Tula. In the presence of Her Excellency Queen Máxima, Governor of Curaçao, Mrs. Lucille George-Wout, Prime Minister, Mr. Eugene Rhuggenaath, Minister of economic development, Mr. Steven Martina, Undersecretary, Mr. Raymond Knops, the delegation and invited guests of Curaçao Ports Authority and the general public, took place the revelation on Mega pier Tula.

In a short speech Minister Martina emphasized the importance and impact that the second CPA_Tula1mega pier has on the economy of Curaçao. The cruise industry is growing worldwide and Curaçao reaps the fruits of this development. "For several decades the trend in the cruise industry can be followed with ships continually becoming larger. That is why 20 years ago the decision was made to build a first pier, known as the Jacky Voges pier. In the meantime the need has grown for a second pier to accomodate the largest cruise ships", commented Minister Martina.

CPA_Tula2On November, 13th last year the first ship, Adventure of the Seas, moored at the Mega pier Tula with more than 4,000 passengers on board. Minister Minister further said that the cruise industry on Curaçao keeps growing due to the unique and authentic nature of our island. Last year, more than 630,000 cruise tourists visited our island. Each cruise tourist spends on average USD 80. That shows that the direct contribution of this sector to the economy of Curaçao is meaningful. CPA's aim is to put it in the next 5 years to CPA_Tula4this end that each cruise season 1 million cruise tourists will visit our island. The upcoming season is aimed at 700,000 cruise tourists, which certainly will be a new record for Curaçao.
At the same time that the construction of the second mega pier began, CPA organized a contest where the entire community of Curaçao could participate to think up a name for the second mega pier. The name Tula came as the winner.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander. Minister Martina and CPA-Director Mr. Humberto de Castro disclosed the name plate. After the revelation Mr. de Castro invited His Excellency King Willem-Alexander and Her Excellency Queen Máxima on the pier for a more detailed explanation of the cruise sector and the vision for the future.
