Horse meat scandal also in Curacao?

Horse meatWILLEMSTAD –  After many reports of European food and products authorities, the Health Department also launched an investigation into horse meat in food here in Curacao. This is according to the Inspectorate for Health.

There is horse meat processed in some products imported from the Netherlands. On the package is reported that only beef is processed but horse meat has been found in products which are labeled “only beef”, in 17 of the 27 European countries. It is still unknown how long the investigation will take and what products will be examined.

The alarm in Europe over the discovery of horse meat in beef products escalated again Monday, when the Swedish furniture giant Ikea withdrew an estimated 1,670 pounds of meatballs from sale in 14 European countries.

Horse meat mixed with beef was first found last month in Ireland, then Britain, and has now expanded steadily across the Continent. The situation in Europe has created unease among American consumers over whether horse meat might also find its way into the food supply in the United States.
