Isla exceeds emission standards in August

Oil refineryWILLEMSTAD - The oil refinery Isla has emitted again far too much sulfur dioxide (SO2) in August. This was reported by the environmental organization Clean Environment Foundation in Curaçao (SMOC).

Measurements at Beth Chaim and Kas Chikitu shows that the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) were exceeded several times.

SMOC received several reports last month from citizens who live in the shadow of the refinery. Inhalation of SO2 irritates the lungs, even at low concentrations, and can include shortness of breath, coughing, and pulmonary edema.
