K1 visits Curaçao to recruit volunteers for disaster relief

K1 volunteers at mass distributions for waterWILLEMSTAD - K1 Britannia Foundation is a non-profit organization established on the island of St. Maarten in 2014. With a focus on second chance programs for vulnerable youth, educational, emotional and extracurricular support for those in foster care, maritime projects, and an extensive volunteer program, the foundation has worked with government and other organizations to serve vulnerable persons.

In 2017, K1 was depended on to lead various aspects of the disaster relief efforts with very limited resources and no advance preparation or training for volunteers. Disaster relief has since become one of the main focuses of the foundation.

“The wake-up call that was the 2017 hurricane season has brought attention to the fact that we must create long-term solutions to be prepared for future disasters,” says Project Manager Iris Hakkens.

For the last months, the foundation has been meeting with key stakeholders in the Emergency Support Functions of the Government of St. Maarten, representatives of international relief organizations, and their volunteers to identify the areas in which K1 can play a meaningful role and what that would entail.

“Because of our post-Irma experience, we see the need to develop a specialized Disaster Relief and Crisis Team (K1 DIRECT) both to assist on St. Maarten and to be deployed immediately before or within 48 hours of a disaster or crisis to other countries in the region,” added Alan Schet, who together with Ms. Hakkens manages the disaster relief program of the foundation.

One branch of DIRECT will be based on Curaçao, where a group of about 20 volunteers will be vetted and selected to participate in a myriad of training to be prepared to assist in managing crises in the region.

Iris Hakkens & Alan Schet will be in Curaçao from August 27th to September 4th to recruit volunteers for this program and are hosting information / question& answer sessions on Wednesday August 29th at 18:00 and again at 19:00 at the Aula at the University of Curaçao located at Jan Noorduynweg 111 for persons seeking more information.

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more or being a part of the team, come to the information session!
