Large machines BOO in revision

Oil RefineryWILLEMSTAD – Two large installations for the production of steam and electricity at the BOO power plant in the area of the Isla refinery will be taken out of circulation. The machines are in need of a major overhaul.

This implies that the plant, managed by Curacao Refinery Utilities (CRU), will supply less power to the utility company Aqualectra.

These past few days, there were power outages in various areas of the island, but mainly in the vicinity of the Santa Rosa area and east of it. The spokesman of the utility company, Sharo Bikker indicated in the media that there were problems with the supply of electricity provided by the BOO plant. She also said that Aqualectra has sufficient spare capacity to provide electricity. Those neighborhoods which have experienced power outages, only had to wait for about an hour before the electricity was back.

During the next two months there will be two large machines in revision. The daily supply by the central BOO to Aqualectra will be less during this period.

Contractually, the BOO plant must supply at least 22 megawatts to Aqualectra. According to a representative of the utility company this was in the last few months around 30 and sometimes even 40 megawatts because all the machines of the BOO-plant were operational.

In the next two months the supply will drop to 10 megawatts because of the revisions. Aqualectra director Darick Jonis states that this is sufficient.
