LEED Workshop

LeedWILLEMSTAD - On March 27  & 28, 2014, BPM held their first workshop this year regarding efficient energy use in existing buildings: Take the LEED in your building!

Bedrijvenplatform Milieu (BPM), also known as the Curacao Business Council for Sustainable Development, is a non-profit association focusing on sustainable development in business.  Each year BPM organizes a series of sustainability themed events.

BPM organized its first 2-day workshop this year about efficient energy in existing buildings. The aim of the workshop was to teach companies how to maximize the efficiency of their operations while minimizing the impact on the environment.

The 2-day workshop was guided by the well-known architect Luis Huertas from Jackson Architecture & Consultancy, Aruba.

Representatives from several local companies; Aqualectra, Artutrust, Curacao Airport Holding, Curacao Airport Partners, Curacao Ports Authority, EcoVision, Fundashon Kas Popular, GreenForce, and Santa Barbara Resort, learned how to efficiently operate their buildings.

During the first day, Mr. Huertas gave an introduction to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification program, and the 9 participating companies had the opportunity to benchmark their existing buildings with respect to energy and water efficiency using Energy-Star’s Portfolio Manager software. Noteworthy is that a number of the participating companies will stay connected through Portfolio Manager to monitor their progress over the coming months and to support each other. Additionally, the participating companies worked on developing an action plan for future improvement of their buildings.

On the second day of the workshop, presentations were given by Timo Brouwer & Chris van Grieken about their own green building initiatives.

Furthermore the participants had the opportunity to establish an action plan and discuss their own initiatives towards more energy efficient buildings.
At the end of the workshop, each participant was given a certificate for their participation in the workshop.

The reactions from the participants were highly positive. One participant’s overall impression was that the workshop was: “Highly informative, educational, inspiring and that it was a thought -provoking workshop”

Another participant said it was: “Impressive; all the savings which are out there.’”

The organization looks back on a successful event.
