Local Doctor: “Chikungunya is rampant in Curacao”

Chikungunya virusWILLEMSTAD - Chikungunya virus is spreading rapidly on Curaçao. According to some General Practitioners, they see on average twenty patients on a daily basis who have all the symptoms of the disease. It indicates that this disease has a major impact on the economy of the island. This impact is associated with the large number of sick leaves reported daily.

Dr. Jansen spoke with the Caribbean Network and indicated that he expects the disease to become more widespread as the rainy season approaches.

The carrier of the virus, the Aedis aegypti mosquito, is expected to reproduce in large numbers in the rainy season. The exact number of infections is difficult to estimate, because many patients do not go to the doctor.

The Caribbean Public Health Organization (CARPHA) indicates that Curaçao per September 15, had 58 confirmed infections, but it is suspected that more than 600 people have the disease.
