Local staff Coast Guard continues to strike

Coast GuardWILLEMSTAD – Recently the local personnel of the Coast Guard started a strike because they feel discriminated against and harassed by their Dutch colleagues. Since Friday, 90 percent of the employees laid down their work.

According to Ronald Abrahams, leader of the NAPB Union, the Coast Director Dick Swijgman refused to discuss the issues with the local staff. Abrahams says that the Union has contacted the advisors of Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro. These issues will be examined together with the advisors of the Minister to see what can be done.

Abrahams stated during a radio interview this morning that as of this moment, Curacao’s coast is open for imports of drugs, weapons and illegal aliens. “Virtually everything can be transported to the island since the coast guard is not operating. We will not operate until the Director of the organizations sits down and discuss these issues with us,” according to Abrahams.
