Prisoners want conditions improved

prisonWILLEMSTAD – 145 prisoners from the Curacao Detention Center have written a letter, through their lawyer Mr. Everett Wilsoe, to the Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro (PAIS). In this letter they ask the Minister to pay more attention to “the degrading conditions of the detention center”.

In the letter, the prisoners mentioned that there hasn’t been a dentist in prison for quite some time now and no dietitian for prisoners with health problems.  Toilets often don’t work in detention cells and in many cells there are no running water. There are also no day programs, let alone educational, social and sporting activities.

Also, according to the lawyer, many prisoners have difficulty with the food which is served daily because of their physical condition. There has long been no nutritionist available in prison to make sure the daily hot meals are according to the needs of each prisoner.  Unfortunately, there is not enough fresh food and no variety at all in what is being served.

Minister Navarro has 30 days to respond to the letter.
