Rare species of dolphin and shark around Curacao

DolphinsWILLEMSTAD – Researchers from IMARES Wageningen UR have counted sea creatures from an airplane this month. The research in the waters of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao focused mainly on species and distribution. Notable finding were particularly the rare beak dolphin and basking shark.

The research team also recorded sea turtles, sharks and seabirds. In terms of marine mammals, the final score was four with the humpback, bottlenose, spotted / slim dolphin (both species are difficult to distinguish from a plane) and the beak dolphin. The first three types are more common, the beak dolphin is much rarer. To the north of the island there was also the basking shark spotted. That animal is rare in the region.
