Teachers threaten to protest if collective conditions aren’t met

WILLEMSTAD  The members of education union Sitek demand that Minister of Education Carlos Monk (PS) pay the annual wage indexing and increase at the end of this month. A meeting was scheduled today between the minister and the board of Sitek. Earlier on the minister assured his intention to meet the collective conditions.

A general meeting was held yesterday at the Sitek-building. The collective conditions were listed on the agenda. The members decided to continue the meeting at seven this evening, when Sitek-chairman Darius Plantijn is expected to give more information on the payment.

The teaching staff even fear there’s no money to meet the collective conditions. However, the minister of Finance promised it would be available. “Approximately 2000 employees are entitled to a wage increase of ± 300 guilders per month”, said Plantijn.

According to the Sitek-chairman, since January the government has a list of the compensations to be paid per teacher. The personnel is entitled to wage indexing since January but was this was postponed indefinitely. The union members now demand that the money – with retroactive effect – be credited to their account on August 30th at the latest.
