Tele Curacao and TCFM to become independent

TelecuracaoWILLEMSTAD – During the UTS shareholders meeting in Sint Maarten it was decided that Tele Curacao and TCFM (radio) must be separated from the public company United Telecommunication Services (UTS). This will have to take place before the end of this year. Now the TV and radio station are subsidiary companies of UTS.

"TeleCuraçao and TeleCuraçao FM are separate limited liability companies which are subsidiaries of UTS. How it is going to be so precise, one radio and television company or two separate companies, have not been worked out yet,” Minister of Communications, Earl Balborda said.

“The new company will have its own management and Supervisory Board. For the staff of the television and the radio station, these changes have no effect,” the minister said.

“Given the current situation of UTS, we have decided that it is better for the company to concentrate on its core business,” Balborda said. These are telephone and internet. UTS is not going through its best times right now. The company is in serious financial problem. Recently there was a voluntary layoff to reduce the number of employees. About 100 people have taken advantage of this offer. After the voluntary layoff, there was supposed to be a mandatory layoff with the intention to reduce the workforce by 200 men.
