Three from shipwreck still missing

oceanWILLEMSTAD - Three of the five people who were on board of the sunken ship in Cuba are still missing. The fourth crew member died. Silvio Helmijr is accounted for and is in good physical condition. He is currently in an office of the Cuban immigration.

He is not in possession of identification or travel documents and therefore cannot stay in a hotel. The Office of Foreign Relations and the Dutch Embassy in Havana have interceded and issued an emergency passport and a ticket to return to Curacao.


After four days drifting in a lifeboat Helmijr was found in Maisí by Cuban fishermen, who took him to shore. Another passenger died according to Helmijr just before the rescue. All this time the two sat without food and drink. The remains of the deceased were placed in a morgue in Santiago de Cuba.


Five men brought a yacht from Miami to Curacao, but because of the storm, their ship got into trouble and was lost. They were just in time to jump in their lifeboat, but which turned out to be in bad condition. Two crew members, according to Helmijr, were thrown overboard by the waves. He does not know when the third disappeared. The three are still reported missing.
