UNICEF reports on situation Curacao children

WILLEMSTAD – A research, which was commissioned by UNICEF and the United Nations children's organization, has been done on the situation of children in Curaçao in 2012. A report was created with their key findings and recommendations. The survey was conducted by the non-governmental organization OSE (Observatorio Social del Ecuador).

The first finding mentioned in the report is discrimination. "A persistent remnant of the colonial period is a discriminatory attitude based on race or class, which can lead to marginalization, vulnerability and risk environments for some young people," the report states. Also aging on the island is cited and the shortage of skilled professionals.

The recommendations are divided into several categories: general, health, education, protection and participation. Finally a conclusion is disclosed. This is mainly a cooperation between civil society organizations.
