Uniek Curaçao is looking for volunteer maintenance oil containment boom

Oil BoomWILLEMSTAD - The so-called 'oil containment boom' which should protect the water at the salt pans at Jan Kok, is outdated, but with some maintenance, it can still serve the nature reserve, says Theo van der Giessen of the Foundation Uniek Curaçao.

That is why the organization is looking for volunteers who want to help maintain and clean the oil boom.

In 2012, the salt pans were heavily contaminated with oil. Although it has since been cleaned up and the area has been largely restored from the disaster, the chance of repetition is real, says van der Giessen. The 'oil boom' does not belong to Uniek Curacao, but neither the government nor the oil refiner seems to be planning to replace it any time soon.
