UoC students are mad and disappointed

UniversityWILLEMSTAD – “They didn’t give us the opportunity to bring something to the table. The decision had already been taken,” a student majoring in financial management at the University of Curaçao said. She and a few hundred other students came to the information session at the UoC about the increased tuition.

Last Friday these students and their parents learned that the tuition for the academic year 2014-2015 will be increased. The fee for the Bachelor’s degree increases from 2500 to 3500 guilders. For the Master degree, students must now pay 4,500 guilders, instead of 2,500 guilders.

Rector Magnificus Francis de Lanoy explained publicly why the fees had to be increased; the main reason is the high debt of the university. There is also the problem of staff shortage and other issues that have to be improved.

“My top priority is the staff, but we have to show creditors that we begin to pay our debt. That can only happen if there is more money.”

Foundation Education Financing Curacao (SSC) was also present to provide additional loan for students who cannot afford the tuition. Despite numerous attempts by the SSC and De Lanoy to reassure students and answer their questions, the ‘Boo’ was predominant. “It is inhumane that they still carry such an increase while the quality of the building and the classes are so inadequate. No excuse makes this well,” a disappointed group of students said.
