Venezuela: Netherlands disturbs peace in the region – Curaçao on alert

Maduro_CabelloCARACAS, THE HAGUE - The Dutch government 'torpedoes' good relations between Venezuela and the former Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. This was declared by the President of the Venezuelan parliament and vice president of ruling party PSUV, Diosdado Cabello, in his weekly television program.

These statements were made following the arrest of the former intelligence chief of Venezuela in Aruba.

“Gentlemen of the Dutch government, rectify. This is not the way. This puts the good relations with Venezuela in danger,” he said. Netherlands is according to Cabello behind the arrest of Hugo Carvajal in Aruba, who was waiting for approval to be installed as consul general on that island. However, he is wanted by the United States for drug trafficking by the FARC.

The arrest of Carvajal was celebrated by the Venezuelan opposition parties. These parties have been in constant protest against the government of President Nicolas Maduro. “The narco regime is crumbling,” a pro opposition website stated in response to the arrest of the Venezuelan diplomat.

It is not the first time that discord prevails between Venezuela and the Netherlands. In 2006, former President Hugo Chavez called the former Dutch Foreign Minister Henk Kamp a “pawn of Washington”. Camp feared that Chavez wanted to expand his influence in the former Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

Curaçao is on high alert because of the relations with the South American country. Venezuela operates the refinery in Curaçao. Also, the local airline InselAir operates various daily flights to and from the neighboring country.
